GPM Calculator

Calculating the Gallons Per Minute (GPM) needed for your hydroponic system water filtration setup depends on your total system volume, desired turnover rate, and any flow losses caused by filters, plumbing, fittings, and head pressure.

This calculator helps estimate the flow rate needed to circulate and filter your hydroponic system water at the turnover rate you choose.

Calculate Your Hydroponic Flow Rate

Gallons Per Minute, or GPM, is the flow rate needed to move water through your filtration system. For hydroponic systems, the right flow rate helps keep water circulating, supports filtration performance, and helps maintain a more consistent nutrient solution.

To calculate the required GPM, start with the total volume of water in your system and decide how many times per hour you want that volume to be circulated and filtered.

GPM = (Total System Volume x Turnover Rate) / 60

Total System Volume

Total system volume is the total amount of water in your hydroponic setup. This can include the reservoir or tanks, plumbing lines, filtration housings, and any other components that hold water.

For best results, estimate the full operating volume of the system rather than the reservoir alone.

Turnover Rate

The turnover rate is how many times per hour you want the total water volume to pass through the filtration system. For many hydroponic systems, a turnover rate of 1 to 2 times per hour is a common starting range.

For example, a 100 gallon system with a turnover rate of 1.5 times per hour requires 150 gallons per hour of flow. Dividing by 60 gives a base flow rate of 2.5 GPM.

System Loss Allowance

Real-world flow can be reduced by head pressure, filter restriction, pipe length, elbows, fittings, and equipment efficiency. The optional system loss allowance lets you add a percentage buffer to the base result when selecting a pump or filtration system.

If you are unsure, calculate the base GPM first, then review the pump or filter manufacturer's flow chart for your specific setup.

Important Factors to Consider

When selecting a filtration system or pump, consider:

  • Total system volume
  • Desired turnover rate
  • Head pressure
  • Filter efficiency and restriction
  • Pipe diameter and plumbing layout
  • Number of fittings, bends, and valves
  • Manufacturer flow ratings
  • Specific requirements of your hydroponic setup

Estimate Your Required GPM

Enter your total system volume in gallons, your desired turnover rate per hour, and any optional system loss allowance. The calculator will estimate the required GPM for your hydroponic water filtration system.

This calculator provides an estimate only. Always confirm equipment sizing with pump curves, filter specifications, and the requirements of your actual hydroponic system.
